Toenail fungus is a fungal infection of the toenails turning them yellow, black, flaky, brittle, and distorted. This is caused when the toes are exposed to damp and dark environments, often the result of the feet remaining in socks and shoes all through the day. Some of the causes for toenail infection are poor hygiene, abnormal PH levels in the skin, and weaker immunity. This makes the toes discolored and smelly and can be contagious if the infection persists for a long period.

There are many natural cures for toenail fungus. Vinegar, alcohol, tea tree oil, grape seed extract, and other natural products are beneficial in curing toenail fungus. Tea tree oil is considered especially effective in healing toenail fungus. A few drops of undiluted tea tree oil can be applied on the toenails thoroughly every day as the oil is a good antiseptic and effective fungicide. You should continue to use tea tree oil even if you notice that the infection is cleared because this will help to get rid of any deeply embedded infections as well.

Listerine mouthwash can be used as an effective antiseptic to clear toenail fungus. Listerine can be mixed with apple cider vinegar and lemon juice in a tub of warm water. Soak your feet in it for 20 to 30 minutes to clear the infection. This is effective if done every day. In case of a severe infection you can soak a ball of cotton in the liquid and tie it around the toe nail to allow the medication to seep in.

Soak your feet in a tub of warm water to which tea tree oil and lavender oil has been added. After soaking your feet you can use a natural scrub made with coarse rice powder and apple cider vinegar to remove the dead skin cells and the nail cells and to keep toes clean and soft. Olive oil and lemon juice can be used to massage the feet to soften skin and prevent infection.

A healthy diet, good hygiene, and regular care of the toenails will keep toenail fungus at bay.
